Winter Mulching
Written by TC Pallet
Most people think of mulching as a spring task, but a winter application has real benefits — especially for protecting plants through the worst of the cold.
Insulation
A layer of mulch acts as insulation, keeping soil temperatures more stable through freeze-thaw cycles. That stability protects roots from damage and reduces frost heave.
Moisture Retention
Winter winds can dry soil faster than expected. Mulch helps hold the moisture plants need to make it through the dormant season.
Spring Prep
A bed mulched in winter is ready to go come spring. Soil warms more evenly, weeds are slower to start, and your plants get a head start.
