Reclaiming Beauty: Prepare Recycled Pallets for DIY Projects
Written by TC Pallet
There is a certain allure to building and creating with recycled materials. It's not just the environmental benefits, significant as they are. It's also about the transformation – the magic of turning what was once discarded into something functional and beautiful. When it comes to such transformations, few materials are as versatile or as readily available as recycled pallets.
But even with pallets in abundance, it's important to know not all of them are the right choice for furniture or a home décor project. Choose wisely, and a high-quality pallet is a great way to complete some decorating at home without spending a lot of money on new lumber.
Tips for Choosing and Preparing Recycled Pallets
- Use discretion when choosing pallets — They should be hardwood (not particle board) and in good condition with minimal exposed nails. Avoid grocery stores (potential spills and food spoilage) and places where chemical spills could be prevalent. Heat treated pallets (marked HT) are your best choice and are available from Tri County Pallet.
- Clean pallets thoroughly — Use a heavy-duty scrub brush and warm soapy water. For heat treated pallets, you can use a power washer and industrial cleaner. If you plan to take the pallet apart, do this before cleaning. Remove all nails.
- Sand and smooth — A sanding block or palm sander makes this job easier. Remove splinters, smooth rough surfaces, and start with a coarse grit and work up to a fine grit.
- Seal or paint — Protect your pallet with a quality wood sealer or paint. A light stain or clear wood sealant retains the most natural appearance. If painting, use a paint suitable for how you'll use the wood and any outdoor exposure.
Remember when using recycled pallets for furniture or crafting projects, the wood will not be perfect. Choose and prepare the best pieces and enjoy the beauty that comes with the imperfections.
At Tri County Pallet, we have pallets in various sizes as well as recycled wood available for a range of applications, including your manufacturing and freight hauling needs. Ask us about custom designing pallets to your specifications.
